Irish Research Begins at Home

This is an invitation for you to READ a new article by Marie E. Daly, Senior Genealogist at the New England Historical Genealogical Society in Boston: “Researching Irish Ancestors Using American Gravestones, Newspapers, and Specialized Records,”American Ancestors 17 (Fall 2016): 28-34.

Ms Daly recommends that you begin at home. And American Ancestors recommends that you start with the new Guidebook: Genealogist’s Handbook for Irish Research,by Marie E. Daly with Judith Lucey; and available from NEHGS, 99-101 Newbury Street, Boston MA 02116-3007, 1-888-296-3447, or online at http://americanancestors.org.

Begin with tombstones and other cemetery records, which often give the place of origin in Ireland. Match with newspaper entries, bank records, and records of Irish fraternal organizations. A simple and easy-to-understand approach for Irish immigrants who flooded Boston and New York City in the mid-1800’s.

Try it. It usually works. And I recommend that you also order the Handbook. Your favorite Scots-Irish genealogist, Arlene Eakle, http://arleneeakle.com

PS With the Irish, you will want all the help you can get.
